The America post

A revised version of my "real Americans" post is up on the political blog called The Moderate Voice, where I am a regular commenter. Thanks, all, for your advice on improving the essay. We will have to see if it gets any comments or not.

I liked the original, and I like this better. On a side note, regarding this: I am proud when I look at the American Olympic team and see virtually every ethnicity in the world standing side by side all representing who America is.

I sat my younger son down to watch the US vs Guatemala soccer match (World Cup qualifier) last week, and my son noticed how many different types of names the players had. Ching, Cherundulo, Bocanegra, Donovan, Mastroeni, Onyewu... when you looked down the roster, every populated continent was represented. Guatemala, on the other hand, had only one type of name.

So, what exactly is "American"? I would say that the fundamental idea of America is dual: Acceptance of all comers on the one hand, and a fierce loyalty to individual liberty on the other. Really, you can't have one without the other anyway.
